Menteri Agama (Menag) Nasaruddin Umar, speaking after several regions held Eid al-Fitr prayers this morning, emphasized that it is their fundamental right to do so. However, he pointed out that it is impossible to sight the new moon at minus 3 degrees, despite advanced technology. Nasaruddin made these remarks after attending the national Takbir parade at Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta on Sunday (March 30, 2025).
Emphasizing Unity and Tolerance
-
Nasaruddin reminded the public that while Eid prayers are a recommended (sunna) practice, unity is obligatory. He urged everyone to consider Eid al-Fitr as a symbol of tolerance and to prioritize unity amongst Indonesian Muslims.
-
Addressing instances of differing Eid celebration dates, he encouraged the community to view such diversity as a form of tolerance that should be upheld in Indonesian society.
Adhering to Democratic Principles
-
Acknowledging that some regions may choose to hold prayers earlier based on their own calculations, Nasaruddin emphasized that in a democratic nation like Indonesia, such decisions should be respected as long as they are based on sincere efforts (ijtihad).
-
While certain areas, including North Jakarta, celebrated Eid on the day in question, the official decision of the government was to observe Eid al-Fitr on the following day, in accordance with the announcement for 1st Shawwal 1446 H.
